Flood Hit Four Villages in East Lombok
East Lombok (22/1/06)
Over 2,000 families were evacuated, two reported death and
some are still missing as the Flash Flood hit four villages in East
Lombok.
 Seasonal
downpours have triggered floods in most areas in eastern part of
Indonesia including some part of east Lombok. East Lombok's Sambelia
district and Sembalun Bumbung, located about 75 kilometers east of
the province's capital city Mataram, has been particularly hard hit
since Saturday, with two confirmed deaths and scores missing.
Flash floods sent torrents of mud and water rushing down the eastern
slope of Mount Rinjani and three rivers burst their banks.
As of late Sunday, more than 2,500 people from the regency had been
evacuated to nearby schools, office buildings and mosques.
Hundreds of others, including 300 residents of Batusele village,
remained trapped in their homes and found shelter on their roofs.
Others told of battling strong floodwaters to reach safety.
some residents sitting on the roofs of their home and a local mosque
amid the rising floodwaters.
Bad weather and a collapse of a bridge leading to Batusele prevented
assistance from reaching the village.
Donations of cash, instant noodles, rice and drinking water started
to arrive
Monday, but the supplies were inadequate for the thousands of
displaced people.
The Save &
Rescue Team (SAR) are still working hard to help those survival from
the isolated area in
Dusun Sandongan and Dusun Menanga Reak, Belanting
East Lombok.
People were still asleep when the water
suddenly entering the houses at 02:00AM in the morning. They tried
to rescue themselves and run into higher ground. Water were
everywhere and over hundreds of family were still sleeping when they
realize that the flood had just hit their houses.
They are now being accommodated at the
nearest schools, mosques and safe areas while waiting for some help
on food supplies and medications.
