Governor Of NTB
Tourism prospects and Initiatives for Lombok

Lombok Times - March 2004
Exclusive interview granted to Lombok Times Newspaper, conducted at the office of the Governor of the province of West Nusa Tenggara on Wednesday, 3rd of March 2004 with Bapak Governor, Drs. Lalu Serinata.

Present also was the Director of Culture and Tourism for West NusaTenggara Province, Drs. Machfud Ahmad and special assistant to the Governor of West Nusa Tenggara, M Salim Amim Saleh.

This interview was stimulated by the recent introduction of VOA policy in Lombok and the general tourism situation and climate presently in the province.

We are happy to report that the local government, stimulated by the attitude of the Governor’s Office and that of the Director of Tourism, are exhibiting great cooperation and are welcoming enquiries from Lombok Times in the future, regarding the Government’s initiatives and plans for encouraging tourism growth in Lombok.

The following interview was presented in the form of questions and answers.

Q : Are you happy with the fact that the Visa on Arrival facility has been approved?
A : Yes, I am more than happy that VOA has been approved. Fast and efficient service extended toward foreign visitors is absolutely necessary. Word of mouth promotion regarding this province as a tourist destination is a very effective mechanism to revive our tourism industry.

Q : Do you see the VOA facility assisting and improving tourism in Lombok?
A : Naturally, this is a great help to enhanced our image abroad.

Q : Tourist figures in Bali in the last few months have greatly increased. What do you think that stake holders can do to attract these tourists to Lombok?
A : I have no wish at all to compete with Bali. What I would like is for ask to complement each other.

Q : Is the present airport one way going to be extended?
A : That is under consideration, but what I am thinking of is a new international airport which can connect all tourist destinations to Lombok.

Q : Do you see tourist figures improving this year?
A : I am optimistic the tourist figure will improve this year. If all those parties concerned with tourism would follow all necessities, such as a good infra structure, conducive environment, attractive tourist site and elimination of all the negative factors.

We plan to continue a series of articles and next issue we will report on an interview conducted with the Director Machfud Ahmad on 3rd March also.
