Campaign to keep Lombok Tidy

Lombok Times, March 2004
“ KEEP LOMBOK TIDY” (KLT), a program aimed at raising the awareness of the community about litter or thrown out rubbish has been proposed to run in lombok (and later in sumbawa as “Keep Sumbawa Tidy “) based on the keep Australia beautiful campaign, the program will promote responsible community attitudes forwards the disposal of unwanted item s; reduce the volume of litter in lombok; research and formulates appropriate policy and legislation a challenging task to say The least!

The program was outlined to key stake holders from the province, west lombok and Mataram regencies fo comment and discussion at meeting was conducted on 3 march at BAPPEDA office in Mataram. The meeting was chaired by regional economic development adviser to the NTB government, DR Dietrich Lerche l and included a presentation about the keep Lombok tidy program by Mataram – based consultant, peter Markey.

It was proposed that the program would run eventually as a council an association between government and private sector managed on private sector principles, not part of the government.

The funding would come from community corporations operations operating at a provincial level, and supported by government assistance. Participants who attended this meeting now process a common perception for achieving success with the cleaning up program.

Ibu Rochniyah, Headmistress of SMPN II MAtaram, and observed much success. However there was scope for other school to make a cleaning program together she felt that, at present, a clean and healthy living program for students at school does not continue into their social life. Hopefully the KLT program can help into increase the awareness of the whole community about cleanliness, extending further existing reactive programs such as the widespread “clean Friday” (Jumat Bersih) program, and the localized" Senggigi / Batu Layar, gili ECO trust and Rinjani Trekking programs.

According to Pak Wiwin, general manager of the Lombok Intan Village, council members need to make a policy proposal to cove all cleaning programs that already and can exist the KLT program could become a patron organization of the programs that exist. As such we need to make a sample “model” of this program. Pak Irfan, Manager of Rinjani Trekking Center, explained that there have been many efforts to increased people’s awareness to care for the environment and yet we have not seen optimal result. So how can we change the behavior of people about cleanliness? Pak Wahab, Biology Lecturer at the teacher training faculty at the University of Mataram gave some suggestion:

- Prepare rubbish bins according to items: rubbish, recyclable, & green waste.
- Use a simple model from a housing areas deserving of recognition.
- Use the events that exist to socialize the program easier, such as the present Dengue Fever virus outbreak.

All in all, the system that eventually will be used must be researched and fit in with the community situation. Exciting programs must be directly monitored so this programs can be kept going on.

The professional organization to be established to work uninterruptedly with these exciting community elements (community members, businessman, council members, body corporate, etc.) will produce a fully developed work plan. To ensure success in the long term, collaboration from all parties will be vital to carry out this Keep Lombok Tidy program.
