Interviews
NEW YORK MEETS LOMBOK
Lombok Times (09/19/2004)
I was invited to interview a couple of American students that had
been childhood mates since the age of 4, been inseparable at junior
and senior high school and now were embarking upon a great adventure
to Indonesia. I was delighted to here that they were staying at
Qunci villas at Mangsit Beach in Lombok. What a superb place to
conduct at interview. Soon they would separate for the first time in
their lives and head off in different directions to attend
University.
They sounded like fascinating people to meet and I was looking
forward to their impressions of Lombok, as they had been here and
around NTB for nearly six weeks.
On the 28th June this year, these two fun loving New York students
and close buddies arrived on our gorgeous Island of Lombok. Leaving
behind a vibrant and bustling New York City to visit tranquil and
peaceful Senggigi in NTB. These places are poles apart in geography,
climate, lifestyle, population, traffic, culture etc., you name it!
The boys Jo Jo and Fernando were in their late teens and evidently
experienced a culture shock that shook them up and then some, when
they first arrived! I mean think about it New York compared to
Mataram! Well, now there’s a comparison with a real difference! When
I finally interviewed them, they had become very accustomed and
familiar with our lovely Island. Much to my astonishment they had
been everywhere from visiting dragons on Komodo, met two lovely girl
in Jogjakarta and had traveled the length and breadth of Lombok.
These boys were no lightweights when it came to achievements,
ambition or intellect! Jo Jo was finishing 11th Grande Huntington
Collage for gifted children. He had been accepted by Washington
University to study Medicines and become a Surgeon. No easy feat –
10 years before he gets to handle a scalpel on a human body! Now
that’s devotion to a cause. Jo Jo was here with his parents and
visiting relations for the first time in Lombok. Fernando was
currently completing senior study at Le Guardia School of Performing
Arts and is intending to embark on a 4 year course at the Culinary
Arts School New York and was traveling with his buddy possibly for
the last time before they follow their careers.
OK now! Asked them the $64 question………What are your impressions of
Lombok and can you compare it in any way with New York? Jo Jo said,
"I like living in New York but Mangsit in Lombok is the only other
place I would complete living in the world, event tough the two
places are streets apart!"
“Lombok is quite, beautiful and reflective and that’s what I prefer”
Fernando said, "Lombok is a wonderful place to visit and we have had
an awesome time and I will always include it in my plans to return
in the future! prefer the fast lifestyle of New York at this stage
in my life, but who knows how our impressions change" The two boys
from New York claimed they met many fascinating local people,
partook of Bali, Jogjakarta, Lombok and The Gilis nightlife,
purchased many local artifacts and gifts, visited Kuta, Mt Rinjani,
the Monkey Forrest and saw much more and even had experienced the
local villagers of Mangsit kill and cut a goat for dinner and had
sat and ate with them! It was an adventure that the two boys from
New York will treasure for many years to come and they are two that
will be back! |
