HINDU'S NYEPI CELEBRATION IN BALI AND LOMBOK
Lombok March 11th, 2005
The celebration of Hari Raya Nyepi (quiet day) in Indonesia is
focused in Bali as majority of inhabitants are Hindus.
The Ngurah Rai Denpasar International Airport Bali and both Ferry
Harbour; Padang Bay in East Bali(connecting passengers to Lombok)
and Gili Manuk in West Bali(Feery to Java) are closed for 24 hours
during the Nyepi Day and shall be re-open on March 12th.
Bali is totally quiet during Nyepi day. There are no activities at
all from 05:00AM until same time the next day (24hours). Balinese
stay in their own house or temple to do worship of Catur Tapa Brata=Spiritual
Meditation to accelerate human with the nature. Nyepi day is a holy
day for Balinese Hindus.
Eventhough there are minority of moeslem in Bali and every friday
they must go to mosque for a friday pray, to respect this Hindu's
holy day, they are only allowed to go out just from 12:00-13:00PM,
without using loudspeakers and no motorcycles or vehicles.
In every corner of the street, there are some local guard (Pecalang)
who control the area and ensure that no one is out for whatever
reason.
Many tourists and expats escape to Lombok or East Java for a bit of
more action, just to avoid Nyepi until all the public services
re-open again. There are significant number of hotel's occupancy in
Senggigi and The Gilis for the last three days. One of the four
stars hotel (Intan Lombok Village) has notified local tour operators
that they are fully booked from March 10th-13th.
Nyepi day is also celebrated in Bali's neighbour island, Lombok. In
some area in West Lombok (Mataram, Cakranegara) and North Lombok (Tanjung),
Balinese villages are closed (no activities) , but hotels,
restaurants and shopping area is still open in Lombok.
The day before Nyepi day is a festival called "Pawai Ogoh-ogoh".
Ogoh-Ogoh is a statue of Beast/Evil made of used papper and cement
by local villagers artists as a symbol of bad spirits/beast.
Every Banjar (Village family community) will sent one of their
creation to be later joining the carnaval of Ogoh-ogoh along the
main street. At the end of the ceremony, the ogoh-ogoh is burned as
symbol of the winning of "Dharma=truth, good" against "Adharma=evil/bad".
